The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers was established May 5, 1888 by 19 Railroad Machinists in Atlanta, GA. It has grown to represent 600,000 workers across the U.S. and Canada. Today, the IAM is a strong, diverse, and modern union—fighting forward and on the move.
IAM District 19 has offices in Coxsackie, New York and Richmond, Virginia. We proudly represent 7,500 rail workers across America who work in the freight rail industry, commuter rail, short line operations, and railroad-related manufacturing. Our professional and diverse staff bring years of hands-on experience from the freight, commuter, and heavy equipment rail sectors.
When workers organize, they don’t just get better paychecks — they get power, respect, and a seat at the table. Without a union, "at-will" employment means your rights can be trampled with little recourse. A union contract is legally binding and enforceable, not just a promise.
The IAM Union negotiates industry leading contracts with the biggest Rail Companies in America. Our members enjoy safer working conditions, good pay and health benefits and a voice on the job. The IAM fights hard and wins strong agreements that raise the standard for the entire industry. With decades of experience and a proven track record, we deliver real results for working people.
